In June 1699, a 52-year-old woman boarded a ship in Amsterdam bound for Suriname, a Dutch colony on the northeastern coast of South America. She was traveling without her husband — she was divorced, unusual enough in itself — and accompanied only by her 21-year-old daughter. Her purpose was not trade, not religion, not family. She was going to the jungle to study insects, at her own expense, in an age when women were barred from universities, from scientific academies, and even from painting in oil. The expedition shocked her contemporaries. It also produced one of the most important scientific books of the eighteenth century.
Her name was Maria Sibylla Merian, and she is one of history's greatest examples of what a self-taught learner can do. She had almost no formal education. She taught herself art, entomology, and — in her late thirties — Latin, the language of scientific publication, so that her discoveries could speak to the scholars of Europe. David Attenborough has called her one of the most significant contributors to the field of entomology. Her portrait once appeared on Germany's 500-mark banknote. And she did it all without a single classroom, a single degree, or a single male mentor opening a door for her. Her story is a masterclass in self-directed learning — and in learning a language as an adult, on purpose, for a reason that matters to you.
A Girl in the Printshop of Frankfurt
Maria Sibylla Merian was born on 2 April 1647 in Frankfurt am Main, in the patchwork of small states that would one day become Germany. Her father, Matthäus Merian, was one of the most famous engravers and publishers in Europe — his illustrated city views and natural histories were prized across the continent. When Maria Sibylla was three years old, her father died, and her mother remarried a still-life painter named Jacob Marrel, a student of the great flower painter Georg Flegel.
Marrel gave his stepdaughter an artist's training, and it mattered more than he could have known. In seventeenth-century Frankfurt, the painters' guild forbade women from painting in oil — the medium of serious art. So Merian learned to work in watercolor and gouache on parchment, a "lesser" medium that would turn out to be perfect for what she would eventually do: depicting insects and plants with botanical precision, in luminous, lasting color.
And then there were the caterpillars. As a girl she collected insects and raised silkworms — by thirteen she was breeding them. In the foreword to her most famous book, she later described her childhood fascination: she started with silkworms in her native Frankfurt, noticed that other caterpillars transformed into butterflies and moths, and began collecting every caterpillar she could find to watch what it became. She had access to her father's natural-history books, and she studied them. No teacher assigned this. No school offered it to girls. It was pure, self-directed curiosity — the engine that would drive her for the rest of her life.
The Young Mother Who Painted Flowers
In May 1665, at eighteen, Merian married Johann Andreas Graff, her stepfather's apprentice. The marriage was conventional; the ambitions were not. In 1668 she had her first daughter, Johanna Helena, and in 1670 the family moved to Nuremberg, her husband's hometown. There Merian did what respectable women of her class did — and then some. She painted flowers on parchment and linen, designed embroidery patterns, and gave drawing lessons to the unmarried daughters of wealthy families, a small academy she called her "Jungferncompaney" (the maidens' company). The lessons paid the bills, raised the family's standing, and — crucially — gave her access to the finest private gardens in Nuremberg, where she could collect and study insects.
In 1675 she published her first book: Blumenbuch (Flower Book), the first volume of a three-volume series of flower engravings. In 1678 her second daughter, Dorothea Maria, was born. And in 1679 she published the first volume of the work that defined her: Der Raupen wunderbare Verwandlung und sonderbare Blumennahrung — "The Caterpillars' Marvellous Transformation and Strange Floral Food." A second volume followed in 1683. Each contained fifty plates that she engraved and etched herself, showing caterpillars, chrysalises, butterflies, and moths with the plants they fed on — and, crucially, the stages of metamorphosis documented from her own observation.
She had noticed something the experts had missed. In her era, learned opinion held that insects were "born of mud" — that they materialized by spontaneous generation out of rotting matter. Merian's patient, generation-by-generation observations showed otherwise: caterpillars become pupae become butterflies. Each insect has a life cycle. It was the kind of claim that required both careful eyes and enormous nerve, because it contradicted the received wisdom of centuries.
The Latin Years: Learning the Language of Science
Here is the part of her story that belongs in every language-learning article ever written. In 1685, Merian — with her mother and her two daughters — joined a religious community called the Labadists, who had settled at Wieuwerd in Friesland, in the northern Netherlands. The community was strict and separatist, but it offered her something her marriage had not: time, freedom, and a place where women could study. During the three years she lived there, Merian studied natural history — dissecting frogs and observing their development in the Friesland moors — and she studied Latin.
Why Latin? Because Latin was, in her words' plain meaning, the language of scientific publication. Every serious work of natural philosophy in Europe was written in it. Scholars corresponded in it. If her discoveries were to reach the learned world — if she was to be read by the men who decided what counted as knowledge — her work needed to speak Latin. She was nearly forty years old, a mother of two, self-taught in art and natural history, and she simply decided to acquire the language. No school, no tutor, no immersion trip. Just a woman in her late thirties studying the scientific lingua franca of her age, the way you might study Japanese or Spanish tonight.
The choice was not sentimental; it was strategic, and it worked. The great book of her later life would be written in Latin — and it would be read.
Amsterdam and the Long-Dreamed-of Journey
In 1690 her mother died. In 1691 Merian moved with her daughters to Amsterdam, the richest and most intellectually lively city in Europe, and in 1692 her husband divorced her. Amsterdam's collectors had filled their cabinets with wonders from the Dutch colonies, and Merian went to see them — the insect collections of Nicolaes Witsen, mayor of Amsterdam and director of the East Indies Company; the collections of the anatomist Fredericus Ruysch and others. She wrote of the experience:
"In Holland, with much astonishment what beautiful animals came from the East and West Indies. In these collections I had found innumerable other insects, but found that their origin and their reproduction is unknown, it begs the question as to how they transform, starting from caterpillars and chrysalises and so on. All this has, at the same time, led me to undertake a long-dreamed-of journey to Suriname." — Maria Sibylla Merian
Here is the sentence to underline: "a long-dreamed-of journey." The dream had been building since girlhood, through marriage, motherhood, divorce, and decades of study. Most people, at fifty-two, would call it a fantasy. Merian booked passage.
Suriname: Two Years in the Jungle
In June 1699, Merian and Dorothea sailed for Suriname (then Dutch Guiana). For nearly two years she traveled the colony, sketching insects, reptiles, and plants in the field — the first European scientist to study tropical organisms in their natural habitat rather than from dried specimens shipped home. She recorded the local names of plants, their uses by the indigenous people, and the life cycles of the insects that lived on them. The work was dangerous, exhausting, and expensive; at one point she fell seriously ill with fever (likely malaria) and was forced to return to Amsterdam in 1701.
What she found there changed her view of the colonial world — and the book she published from the journey contains one of the sharpest criticisms of colonial commerce written in her era. The sugar planters, she wrote, had no interest in knowledge:

She condemned the brutal treatment of enslaved people, and she relied on the knowledge of the enslaved and indigenous people around her to understand the plants and animals she found. Merian's expedition predated Alexander von Humboldt's famous South American journey by a full century, and it was undertaken by a self-taught, self-funded woman.
Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium: The Book That Changed Biology
In 1705, at the age of fifty-eight, Merian published Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium — "The Metamorphosis of the Insects of Suriname" — a large-format book of sixty engraved plates, each showing insects at every stage of life arranged on their host plants. It was published in Latin — the language she had taught herself twenty years earlier — and in Dutch, at her own expense. The book sold well enough to be reprinted in 1719, 1726, and 1730, and it became one of the most influential natural-history works of the century.
The contents were genuinely new. Merian was the first European to describe army ants and leaf-cutter ants and their effects on other organisms, and her engraving of a large spider capturing a bird is the origin of the German word Vogelspinne — "bird spider." Her depictions of caterpillars and moths included the plants they fed on, an ecological insight that seems obvious now and was revolutionary then. Her images were so accurate that Carl Linnaeus and other taxonomists later used them to identify roughly a hundred new species. And her insistence that insects develop through predictable stages helped bury the doctrine of spontaneous generation for good.
She even considered publishing an English edition to present to Queen Anne, musing, "It is reasonable for a woman to make such a gift to a queen." The book's vision of nature — creatures locked in a struggle for survival and reproduction — anticipated themes that Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace would formalize a century and a half later.
A Legacy Painted in Watercolor
Maria Sibylla Merian died in Amsterdam on 13 January 1717, at sixty-nine. For two centuries afterward, her reputation suffered a strange fate: art historians filed her under "flower painters," while scientists forgot that the entomology they taught had been partly built by a woman. Modern scholarship restored her. David Attenborough counts her "among the more significant contributors to the field of entomology." Her portrait appeared on the 500 Deutsche Mark banknote in the 1980s. A German research vessel, the Maria S. Merian, was launched in 2005. Species carry her name — the Argentine black and white tegu Salvator merianae, the Cuban sphinx moth Erinnyis merianae, a genus of praying mantises called Sibylla. In 2013, Google marked her 366th birthday with a Doodle.
What Merian Teaches the Language Learner
Strip away the lace collar and the 500-mark note, and Merian's method is strikingly modern:
1. Learn the language your goal requires
She did not learn Latin because it was fashionable. She learned it because it was the key that unlocked the audience she needed. Before you choose between Japanese, Spanish, or French, ask what the language is for — then the studying stops being a chore and becomes a key.
2. Never accept the "too late" argument
She was nearly forty when she took up Latin, fifty-two when she sailed for the jungle, fifty-eight when she published in a language she had taught herself. The idea that adults cannot learn languages would have struck her as absurd.
3. Build the skill around a real project
Merian's Latin had a job to do: publish the Suriname book. Her entomology had a job to do: document the caterpillars. When learning is attached to a project you care about, the discipline stops being willpower and becomes momentum.
4. Ignore the people who mock the attempt
The sugar planters mocked her for studying insects instead of sugar. The scholars ignored her first book because it was written in German for ordinary readers. She published in Latin anyway, and she changed the field. If someone tells you your language project is a waste of time, remember the woman who sailed to the jungle at fifty-two.
Maria Sibylla Merian never had a teacher, a degree, or permission. What she had was a collection of caterpillars, a watercolor brush, a Latin grammar, and a dream she refused to let go of for forty years. That is a learning method — and it is still undefeated.
